Dr. Muneo yoshikawa is currently professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii. He was invited as one of the speakers for the International  Forum 2000 Symposium held at the World Fair 2000 in Germany. The Symposium brought together eminent scientists, philosophers, educators, managers and artists coming from many parts of the world to explore new paradigms of thinking for the 21st century.

He presented his theory of integration based on his Mobius integration philosophy. According to his theory of Mobius integration, as the Mobius Ring visually shows, the front side and the back side of the Ring appear divided, but both sides are apparently  interconnected, and may be viewed as one and the same. This theoretical model indicates that one is neither this side or that side nor beyond both sides, but one is the between. This position of “between” is , however, not a neutral middle position nor a transcendent position “beyond” nor a mere dialectical (melting) synthesis which lacks a dynamic process, but rather is a dynamic, tension-laden “between” in which there is a constant pull from both sides of the pole.

This model signifies the dynamic complementary interplay of two opposing forces, and integrates all the multiple polarities such as yin and yang, man and man, man and the world, man and nature, subject and object, digital and analog, part and whole, mechanistic world view and organic world view, etc. This type of integration may be called an “ identity-in-integration” in which the uniqueness of each is intensified over against the other. This type of integration requires one to hold two paradoxical and contrasting ideas at the same time and, because of this creative tension, one is able to create something anew. This theoretical model of integration was recognized as one of new paradigms for the 21st Century. As a breakthrough thinking model, Dr. Yoshikawa’s theoretical model of integration was recognized as one of the new paradigms for the 21st
